About Pete Rekstis

Recruited to play football for Youngstown State University (YSU) out of high school, Pete Rekstis started as a free safety in all four years of his college career. The YSU Penguins football team reached the playoffs for three of those years, and Pete Rekstis served as the team captain when he was a senior. He graduated from YSU in 1991 with a bachelor of arts in history.

Pete Rekstis went on to establish himself as a successful football coach, serving in a series of assistant coach and defensive coordinator positions with institutions such as the United States Coast Guard Academy, Austin Peay State University, Kent State University, and his YSU alma mater. While coordinating and coaching the Kent State defensive team, he was twice named Northeast Ohio College Assistant Coach of the Year.

Mr. Rekstis has served as a defensive back coach and a defensive coordinator for the University of Rhode Island since 2014. In 2018, he coached the Rhode Island Rams to their first winning season in 17 years.
